A Brief History of Knott's Berry Farm

 Knott’s Berry Farm discount tickets

The park had humble beginnings as a farm from which Walter and Cordelia Knott sold farm-grown berries, pies, and jams from a roadside stall before eventually transforming into the theme park loved by the world. Known for its wooden rollercoaster and classic shows and Old West Ghost Town, Knott’s Berry Farm is a world away from the more modern neighboring parks of Disneyland (15 minutes away) and Universal Studios (1 hour away).

But that’s not to say that everything is old-school. Over the last century, the park has added more modern rides, shows, and attractions, from high-speed thrill rides to a waterpark. There have been many upgrades that put this park in the running next to other Californian theme parks.

The park has plenty to offer in terms of rides and entertainment that caters to all ages – and we mean all ages. Young kids will find distraction among the tamer rollercoasters and fair games, while teens and adults can get the thrill of a lifetime through the fast-paced rides geared towards adrenaline junkies. Even seniors can find something to enjoy in the Old West Ghost Town or Calico Railroad.

Besides rides, there is also a vast selection of shows, from gunfights to a banjo band and dance performances from local indigenous groups. There is plenty to experience apart from rollercoasters. The theme park also has some excellent dining options that accommodate many diets and needs taking off the burden of meals during your time in the park.

Knott’s Berry Farm is considered to be the first theme park in America and has solidified its position in the hearts of families for years due to its classic American charm. Suppose you want to give your family the time of their life at a more affordable price. In that case, you have to check out the theme park while in California – and to save even more, purchase your Knott’s Berry Farm tickets with Funex, where we guarantee some of the lowest pricing in the industry.

What to Expect at Knott’s Berry Farm?

The park is spread out across 57 acres and can be thoroughly explored in a day if you are efficient with your time. The crowds are comparable to Disneyland’s, but people have found that wait times are not nearly as bad. Busy seasons coincide with children’s schooling schedules like other theme parks – summer and spring break are more active seasons, while fall and early spring are considerably less crowded as kids are in school.

The park is sectioned off into five different areas: Ghost Town, Knott’s Soak City, The boardwalk, Fiesta Village, and Camp Snoopy. Each has its own themes and is targeted toward different age groups. Although each area isn’t coherent with just one theme, if you have a map showing you the park’s layout, you shouldn’t have any trouble navigating the park.

Ghost Town

Knott’s Ghost Town discount tickets

Ghost Town is the oldest part of the park and the most popular. Constructed to mimic the Old West, the wooden buildings, steam engines, and characters walking around in clothes reminiscent of the time, Ghost Town is a fun place to hang out for the whole family. There are different shops that you might’ve seen on the main avenue of a dust western town in the 1800s - Glassblowers, woodcarvers, and even a little jail with a talkative fugitive in the holding cell.

As for rides and entertainment, Ghost Town has a great selection of rollercoasters, from the tame Calico Railroad ride to the aggressive thrill ride – Silver Bullet. Depending on age and thrill level, the entire family can find a ride to enjoy together or separately. Activities available to patrons perusing the theme park include gold panning, performances in the Mystery Lodge, and watching Ghost Town Square’s notorious gunfight.

Knott’s Soak City

Knott’s Soak City discount tickets

Stepping back into the modern age, Knott’s Soak City is a waterpark located outside but immediately adjacent to the rest of the theme park. Knott’s Soak City doesn’t open until the end of May and runs as long as the weather is good. Visitors are required a different ticket to get into Knott’s Soak City, but once you get in, you and your family are in for the time of your lives.

Buy your Knott’s Soak City tickets here.

Knott’s Soak City boasts over 23 different slides ranging from tube rides to high-speed thrill rides, a large Wave pool, a lazy river, and a three-story water playhouse with water guns and splash buckets. This means that you can easily spend a whole day getting your fill of water-based fun for the family. There are some must-try attractions among the rides and entertainment in Knott’s Soak City. The Wedge is a family raft ride that will have you and your kids riding down on a large raft while you attempt to navigate drops, twists, and slippery turns. The Lagoon Storm Watch Tower is another raft ride where you and one other can ride down a tube waterslide at dizzying speeds before speeding into the bottom pool.

The Boardwalk

The Boardwalk discount tickets

If you want the feel of a classic California amusement park reminiscent of the one you may find on Santa Monica Pier, head to Knott’s Berry Boardwalk. The Boardwalk is the theme park’s main arcade and game area, where guests can try their hand at some iconic fair games.

Gather your Knott’s Berry Farm tickets and head out onto The Boardwalk, where you can play games, eat delicious food, and ride some awesome rollercoasters. The rides on The Boardwalk are the more modern types that you’d find at a modern-day amusement park, and you can find a great selection of thrill rides and roller coasters aimed toward kids.

You can find classic amusement park rides such as the Supreme Scream ride (a towering drop ride), bumper cars, and some 4D and VR experiences. These newer amusement park experiences, such as 4D and VR, are limited and nowhere near what you’d find at Universal Studios.

Make sure to drop by with your Knott’s Berry Farm discount tickets!

Fiesta Village

Knott's Berry Farm Fiesta Village

Modeled after Mexican villages, Fiesta Village is the theme park’s tribute to California's Spanish roots. With many of the rides, restaurants, and shows emulating Mexico, you and your family are guaranteed to have a fun time in Fiesta Village.

Some of the park's most popular rides are in Fiesta Village, such as Montezooma's Revenge – a high-speed thrill rollercoaster that reaches speeds of up to 55 miles per hour as you whip through a massive loop and tower. However, it should be noted that the rollercoaster is undergoing a face-lift and won’t be open until 2023.

Besides some fantastic rides, you can also find some classic Mexican dishes for which California is known and a few fusions of fair and Spanish dishes. You can easily sit down and enjoy a Mexico-inspired dish before heading onto some of the thrilling rollercoasters packed into Fiesta village... on second thought; perhaps you should ride the rollercoasters first.

Camp Snoopy

Knotts Berry Farm Camp Snoopy

Suppose you have younger kids and are looking for ways to burn their energy, head to Camp Snoopy. The theme park’s kid-centered section of the park, Camp Snoopy’s rides, entertainment, and shows are aimed toward children 10 years and younger.

Based on the beloved Peanuts Characters, even adults can find something enjoyable in this themed section. Pose for photos with your favorite characters before sending your kids on some great, tame kiddie rides before buckling up as a family onto the speedier rides in the area.

There are two different places to eat while in Camp Snoopy – a snack bar tucked inside a cave and a wooden lodge filled with food. Either one will be able to quench any hunger from you and your kids.

Five sections are a lot of ground to cover (not to mention the smaller subsections found between each themed area), but there are two general ways families can tackle the park.

You can either go section by section clockwise, discovering everything offered as you go along. Or you can plan which rides you want to try and then go to those rides in order, jumping section to section. Either way works and allows you to experience the entire park – the one right for you and your family is entirely based on preference and how much time you want to spend perusing.

Going through the park section by section is excellent for thoroughly exploring and getting to know Knott’s Berry Farm if you're not afraid to spend a little time and energy.

However, if you’re short on time, or you have small kids who can’t do an 8-hour park day, then try choosing rides you want to try and then going ride to ride, stopping only for a bit to explore each section as they come.

Another great tip? Don’t eat in the first place you see. Take a look at your complimentary map while on-site or check online before seeing which restaurant you want to eat at rather than stop at the first one you come across. This can save you heartbreak if you see another restaurant you’d like to try, but you have already eaten.
