History of Knott’s Soak City

Knott’s Soak City ticket

The history of Knott’s Soak City begins with the history of Knott’s Berry Farm. Knott’s Berry Farm was America’s first theme park and got its beginnings as a humble, roadside farm and market.

The Knott family would move to Buena Park, California in the 1920s and with the help of a cousin who was an experienced berry farmer, the Knott Family would lease land and begin to farm berries.

By 1923, the Knott Family had a large enough crop to begin selling their berries from a roadside stand on a nearby avenue. At the stand, they would sell berries as well as jams and pies made from their home-grown berries. As business and their crops grew – so did the stand. By 1927 the Knott Family purchased the land, built a house, and made a permanent shop to replace their roadside stand. Their new shop was named Knott’s Berry Place.

Even as the Great Depression began to take hold of America, the Knott Family continued to grow their farm and business. After expanding their land and business the Knott Family decided to investigate claims of a newly created berry which was a fusion between raspberries, loganberries, and blackberries made by a local berry farmer named Rudolph Boysen. Mr. Boysen had abandoned the idea but allowed the Knott family to continue the experiment.

A year later and the Knott family had grown massive berries which they dubbed Boysenberries after the original creator. After this successful experiment, they created products using the Boysenberries which became a smash hit, further propelling the family into the public eye.

Add in Cordelia Knott’s, Walter’s wife, deliciously famous fried chicken dinner which became the center of a public frenzy and a restaurant, and their daughter Virginia's small trinket shop and suddenly the Knott Family Farm became a franchise.

By 1940, Knott’s Berry Farm grew even more popular with the addition of attractions as well as the main street, styled after the Old West where patrons waiting to eat Cordelia’s food would peruse and shop. Walter’s Ghost Town was a hit and quickly became a hotspot for locals and tourists alike.

Slowly but surely, the Knott Family incorporated rides, shows, and attractions into their farm which only proved to further their popularity. Thus, Knott’s Berry Farm theme park was born.

Many of the first rides were themed after the Wild West, from a wooden rollercoaster to a Calico train ride and a Calico Mine ride. However, as the park grew, Knott’s Berry Farm ventured from the Old West and started incorporating different themes as well.

This is where the idea for Knott’s Soak City began to form. The waterpark itself was built years before it would be acquired by Knott's Berry Farm but once owned, they would expand 4 extra acres of slides to the park grounds.

Knott’s Soak City waterpark came in response to the flood of waterparks in the world as more and more amusement park companies began to expand their parks into a complete family holiday multi-park destination. Big theme park companies such as Universal and Disney had begun this process in the decade before, and so it makes sense that America’s first theme park would soon follow suit.

After planning and development, Knott’s Soak City waterpark opened its doors on June 17, 2000. Opened as a seasonal waterpark, Knott’s Soak City welcomes guests anywhere from late May to early September.

Today, Knott’s soak city waterpark and the adjacent Knott’s Berry Farm have created a Buena Park, a Californian multi-park holiday destination that receives around 4 million visitors every year. The classic Knott’s Berry Farm has been a beloved holiday destination for families for generations, while Knott’s Soak City has added a thrilling, watery element to the fun. The addition of the Knott’s Soak City has forever solidified Knott’s Berry Farm as a multi-day, multi-park destination for families looking for a holiday they won’t soon forget. What to Expect at Knott’s Soak City

Knott’s Soak City is located just across from Knott’s Berry Farm and sprawls across 15 acres. Once you enter the park you are met with a large fountain and various shops, a lifeguard hut, and amenities. Move a bit further into the park and you enter the main grounds which house the Sunset River – Knott's lazy river that intersects the park in half. On the far side, you’ll find the large Tidal Wave Bay and a selection of slides while on the closer side you’ll find three different slide complexes.

There are three different restaurants and snack shops located within the waterpark ensuring that you can spend the entire day at Knott’s Soak City without having to leave. The restaurants are located throughout the park – one pizza shop, one grill, and one food hut – and can be located on the park map. Some of the dining options are take and go while others can be enjoyed from the outdoor seating areas located just out front. Read more about the dining options available at Knott’s Soak City further down.

Do note that the rides, attractions, and dining options are accessible with your discount Knotts Soak City tickets.

If you’ve forgotten anything at home and don’t realize it until you get to the park, don’t fret as there is also a lovely shop located near the entrance of the waterpark. You can purchase sunscreen, beach towels, and even sandals should you need them. There is also Knott’s Soak City memorabilia available for purchase at this surf shop so you can buy trinkets and souvenirs to remember the wonderful day you had at the waterpark.

The waterpark itself has its pools, attractions, and slides laid out lavishly with a bit of room between each, but not so far apart that it makes the waterpark hard to walk. Instead, you’ll find the main attractions split onto either side of the park grounds with the extensively long lazy river intersecting the park. The wave pool is at the southeast corner of the park and the thrilling slide complex is at the northwest corner – all included in your discount Knotts Soak City tickets.

A great way to tackle the park is to do the thrilling slides first, especially if you go during the mornings when the lines are shorter than busier times of the day, then head to the lazy river to lounge around for a bit before heading back to the slides. Then when you need a break from fast-paced action, head to the Tidal Wave Bay so you can splash around the waves for the rest of the day, or before you head back to your favorite slides for another go.

If you want a place to put your stuff and have a central meeting place for your friends and family, then consider renting one of the Cabanas that line the wave pool. Settle down in the shade on comfy seating and watch as the waves from Tidal Wave Bay pummels guests over and over again. The rental shop is right near the wave pool and you can also rent tubes from there should you need them. There are also a handful of cabanas available near one of the slide complexes if you’d prefer to watch people race down the slides.

The park is expansive and has a distinct 1950s Californian beach town theme. There is a bridge spanning across the lazy river that will take you across the park or to different slide and splash park areas that you and your kids will thoroughly enjoy. The park’s layout ensures that you’re never bored and gives the illusion of being a large amusement park with different areas so it's easy to spend an entire day exploring.

Tips for Visiting Knott’s Soak City

Whether it’s your first time visiting a waterpark of this caliber or you just want the best tips to make the most of your time at Knott’s Soak City, we’ve got you covered. Below are our top 10 tips for visiting Knott’s Soak City:

  1. Buy discount Knotts Soak City tickets with Funex

Before you even reach the park, the best tip we have for you is to buy discount Knotts Soak City tickets. Saving money on your Knotts Soak City tickets frees up your budget to buy more food, more souvenirs, and more experiences at the waterpark. With Funex you get industry low pricing that can’t be beat, saving you both time and money. Save the hassle and start your vacation early by purchasing your discount Knotts Soak City tickets online at a deeply discounted rate with Funex.

  2. Bring SPF

The Californian sun is hot and the park is entirely outdoors, so it’s very important that you pack a lot of SPF with you. Packing a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher will keep you and your skin safe from the harmful UVA/UVB rays.

The best practice is to apply your sunscreen before heading to Knott’s Soak City, either in the hotel room or in the car ride over. This will allow the sunscreen to really settle in the skin and will ensure that your skin is protected from the first moment you step into Knott’s Soak City.

Another key practice is to continually reapply every hour or so during your stay at the waterpark. After spending some time in the wave pool or the lazy river or cruising down the 2 dozen slides, your sunscreen will begin to wear down so it’s best to reapply as much as you can.

If you forgot your sunscreen at home or you find yourself running low after you and your family get covered up, then you can simply head to the Wipeout Surf Shop located next to the entrance of Knott’s Soak City where you can stock up on sunscreen and even hats, sandals, and beach towels.

  3. Stay Hydrated at Knott’s Soak City

It’s easy to get carried away with the fun of the watery wonderland of Knott’s Soak City and forget to drink water – especially since you’re surrounded by water the entire day. However, Knott’s Soak City is an outdoor waterpark meaning you’ll be under the hot Californian sun all day long, and suffering heat/sunstroke in the middle of your fun family holiday will put a damper on your trip. So, carry a water bottle around with you and make sure to get a few good glasses of cool H20 while eating at one of the on-site restaurants.

There are fountains located around the park for your convenience should you need to refill a water bottle. If you’ve forgotten a water bottle or aren’t keen to refill your plastic water bottle then head to the Wipeout Surf Shop where you can find plenty of water to keep you hydrated.

  4. Arrive Early

The early bird gets the worm and the early park-goers get fewer lines for slides, more room in the tidal wave pool, and get dibs at the best cabana seats in the house. It does pay to arrive at the park early – you won’t have to fend off crowds and if you plan your meals accordingly you can usually dodge the hottest points of the day.

A lot of the rentals at Knott’s Soak City are on a first-come-first-serve basis too so if you want a locker, floatation jacket, and cabana you’ll want to head to the rental stand as soon as you can. The chance to rent any of these amenities is better when you arrive early at the waterpark rather than wait until the afternoon when the park is at its busiest.

  5. Wear the right swimsuit

Wearing the right swimsuit is integral to enjoying your time at Knott’s Soak City. You’ll want to wear something comfortable, and appropriate, and that follows Knott’s Soak City’s guidelines. Swimming wear with metal ornamentation, zippers, snaps, and buttons will stop you from going on most of the slides for safety reasons – so if you don’t want to be turned away, make sure to read up on the Knott’s Soak City Appropriate Attire guide before going to the waterpark.

Knott’s Soak City has some guidelines for appropriate attire while visiting their water park. Some key guidelines are:

    • One or two-piece bathing suits

    • No thongs, denim, transparent materials

    • No metal ornamentation on the swimsuit (this can pose a hazard to yourself, others, and the park property while going on slides, in the lazy river, or the wave pool).

    • No aqua shoes

    • There are a few more that you can check out using the link above, but follow these guidelines listed and rules and you’ll be sure to make the most of your visit to Knott’s Soak City.

  6. Wait 30 minutes after eating

When meal times come round and you and your family stop to grab something to eat, whether, at Longboard’s Grill or Portside Pizza, you’ll be full in no time with the great selection of classic American food such as pizza, chicken sandwiches, wraps, and salads. However, it’s important to let your food digest a bit before heading back into the fray, so to speak.

Lounge down on a cabana, walk around the park or peruse the surf shop – whatever you do, make sure to take at least 30 minutes before heading back into the water. This ensures that you and other patrons are safe while enjoying all the fun that Knott’s Soak City has to offer.

  7. Check the Weather before coming to Knott’s Soak City

Although California is known for its sunny days and beachy vibes, that doesn’t exempt it from a few rain showers and storms throughout the season. Knott’s Soak City does not issue refunds due to inclement weather – meaning that if it storms, you won’t be able to get a refund for your discount tickets. So, you’ll want to be sure to check what the weather will be like on the day you intend on going to the waterpark.

This may seem like kind of a stickler policy, however storms in California are few and far between so you shouldn’t have to be too worried about less-than-ideal weather interrupting your family fun at Knott’s Soak City. However, even if it does rain, it probably won’t rain all day and thus, shouldn’t stop you from taking full advantage of all the fun that Knott’s Soak City has prepared for you. Plus, you’ll probably find fewer crowds during a day of rain at the park.

Of course, if it properly storms, you may be forced to vacate the park either in one of the restaurants or surf shops as it's dangerous to be in water or up high on metal structures during a lightning storm. Again, the storm probably wouldn’t last long and shouldn’t stop you from enjoying a fun-filled day at the waterpark.

  8. Check out the safety restrictions and requirements on the waterslides

This rule is important for those with smaller children, teens, and even adults with special needs as you’ll want to be sure to be informed on whether certain waterslides are safe and accessible to them. Read up on heigh restrictions, supervision requirements, and safety regulations on the Knott’s Soak City website – just click on the specific ride or attraction you want to know about and the information will be available at the bottom of the page.

This will allow you to gauge how many slides and rides are available to be enjoyed by certain members of your family. The slides at Knott’s Soak City are diverse in thrill level too – making most family-friendly that everyone can enjoy. However, more intense rides such as Shore Break and Old Man Falls require that you be above a certain height, ability, and weight in order to ride the slide.

So best practice is to head to the Rides and Experiences section of the Knott’s Soak City website where you can access the rider safety information for all rides and attractions at the waterpark. This also allows you to plan how much time you’ll spend in the park and how to best break up your visit between slides, pools, and meals.

  9. Read up on the Rules at Knott’s Soak City

To be fully prepared for your fun-filled day at Knott’s Soak City, and to ensure no complications during your entry and stay in the park, you’ll want to make sure you read up on the rules for the waterpark. This prepares you with what to expect and will make your time at Knott’s Soak City Easier. You can find the full list of rules for Knott’s Soak City on their official website, but we’ll go through a few key rules to keep in mind while visiting the water park.

First off – make sure that you don’t bring in any prohibited items. These items include glassware, shatter-able materials, water toys, whistles, snorkeling gear, and personal floaties that are not permitted inside the park. Leaving these items at home will ensure your entry into the park.

You also aren’t allowed to bring large coolers, outside food and glass drinks, radios, megaphones, tents, and pop-up playpens.

Second – the only outside beverage you’re allowed in the park is water and/or sports drinks. Any outside food, snacks, and drinks are strictly prohibited.

Third – once already at Knott’s Soak City, you’ll want to be sure to follow the signage located at each attraction and located in and around the park. There is no diving allowed at any of Knott’s Soak City attractions and there is no running or boisterous activity allowed on park grounds. This ensures your safety from falling, scraping, and injuring yourself. These types of rules will be listed on signs around the park so make sure to pay attention to them during your time at Knott’s Soak City.

Fourth – this one is probably obvious but needs to be said regardless; keep a close eye on your small children while in the waterpark. There are a lot of areas that can be unsafe for small children to be near unattended including the lazy river, wave pool, and slide structures. It’s important that all families keep a close eye on small children, even if they are wearing life jackets and floatation devices.

Also, the waterpark can become crowded especially during busier times in the afternoon and evenings making it easy to lose sight of your kids. This can be avoided by planning ahead, arriving early, and having meals during busier times in the park.

  10. Keep a Knott’s Soak City Park map with you

Whether you save it on your phone, print it off of the website here, or grab a map while entering the park, having a detailed guide to the park is a must for a smooth visit. You can mark meet-up spots in case the group gets separated, plan your way around the park, or can just keep track of where everyone is.

Having a park map with you also helps you save time as you don’t have to walk around the large waterpark while trying to find certain amenities – you can quickly locate the washrooms, change rooms, restaurants, and shops using the legend on the map.

This also is a great safety tip; in case of emergencies, you know where you can go for first aid and help. You should make sure that everyone with you, especially smaller kids, knows where they can go if they get hurt or need help – which you can do with the map or point out on your way into the park.
